Penrose Rising Main Abandonment – Kiwi Rail, Otahuhu, Auckland

Client: Watercare Services Limited

Project Scope: Benefil RG30 foam injection of DN800 abandoned steel water main for 1581 lm within a working rail and truck transport yard.

Methodology: The host pipe was exposed as required with injection lengths varying to suitable access locations, with the longest injection length being 241 lm of DN800. The soffit of the host pipe was exposed and temporary manholes were installed to create stable access points within the working rail yard. Inside the manholes a 700mm by 130mm wide slot was cut in the pipe to provide the injection and vent points. Injection pipes were backfilled into position by crushed rock. Work completed over 9 days due to restricted access times, installing 880m3 of Benefil at 1500 lts/min.
